Principles of Success: Two Things We Can Learn About Success from Toddlers

Principles of Success

In Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill, the #2 best seller of all time, Persistence is referred to as “the 8th of Carnegie’s Principles of Success.” Of the 17 principles articulated, two are absolute must-haves if you are going to have any shot at success. One is the first principle – a Burning DESIRE; the second is PERSISTENCE. Certainly, the more of the 17 principles you study, understand and apply, the better your shot at being, doing and having your dreams manifest.

I am convinced that we are born with access to infinite potential, a solid connection to universal intelligence, and co-creators with God. Then, however, our conditioning by outside circumstances, as we grow and mature over time, takes us further and further away from knowing and keeping these truths top-of-mind. Each of us finally stops somewhere along the way to begin a personal, inward journey. That journey simply guides us back, through the layers and years of conditioning, to the original truth and access to what we had to begin with. Infinite potential.

The Challenge:

A one year old boy insists on going down 2.5 steps, head first. Turned around numerous times by adults to go down feet first on his belly, he continued to go down head first. Tears did not stop him. We closed the door, and for a few weeks he was not allowed on the stairs without an adult. The stairs lead into the playroom where his sister and two female cousins were playing! Talk about developing a burning desire! All he wanted to do was get down those stairs!

Okay, I said to him as he continued to fuss about it, and with the back of his shirt grasped firmly in my right hand – and reminding him with incessant reassuring dialogue – down he went feet first! He scrambled up the stairs in no time, and began coming down again. I assumed the voice and shirt grasp for the next 30 trips down the stairs! That was followed by 20 more trips, including experimentation of different movements of arms and legs until … guess what? He turned around and came down feet first on his own!

What did my grandson instinctively have, I had to ask myself as I watched him with awe making his final trek of the day? He had exhibited and exercised the two REQUIRED principles for SUCCESS! – Burning Desire and Persistence

New Challenge:

How to keep him from being conditioned “out-of” that access to his perfect and infinite potential as he grows. It’s a work in progress.

One powerful way to stay focused and to continue to move with persistence toward what you want, particularly for women in business, is to be part of a mastermind group.
I open seats every few months, and on Tuesday, July 11 we begin a new Quarter.
